The history of drugs so far has been of "small molecule" pharmacology, because only small molecules could be absorbed from the gut or the bloodstream. This severely limited the scope of possible chemicals that could be considered. We are, however, on the threshold of the new era of "large molecule" pharmacology, which encompasses genetic engineering and nanotechnology.
